who

who

We are Café de los Muertos (Coffee of the Dead), and we are supremely dedicated to the perfect coffee cup, the perfect espresso, the perfect coffee experience.  Café de los Muertos is a artisan coffee roastery that specializes in organic Fair Trade and Direct Trade coffee. We hope to promote coffee sustainability by supporting truly beneficial relationships among coffee bean farmers and our customers.

We have been roasting unique coffee beans for almost two years now, with the majority of our sales occurring online. We are in the process of establishing a coffee house in Raleigh, NC where we will continue to offer artisan roasts of the best coffees online, but also offer these beans in a cafe as unique as our product offerings.

One goal is to shed more light on the much over-looked Mexican and Central American coffee bean offerings. There is no other region on earth that has a more sustainable plan in place than this area, where organic coffee is standard, responsible and thoughtful farming is expected, and highly rated beans are produced year after year. Another Café de los Muertos goal is to be part of the ever growing movement towards more responsible business practices through the use of 100% compostable materials, reusable and recycled utensils, and up-cycled cafe building materials and decor. Becoming a conduit to a neighborhood, a community, a city, for things greater than ourselves. And doing this while enjoying one hell of a cup of coffee. And finally, we hope to find innovative and exciting ways to support our local community through partnerships with food banks, charities, and anyone in need. Finding unique ways to raise money that goes directly to individuals and families in need of financial support in our great town of Raleigh is integral to our mission. We are fully aware of how lucky we are, and nothing is more electric than seeing a small amount of charity directly affect the lives of someone that lives down the street with you, or works in your building, or can’t even find work.

who we are

what

what

This web site has previously been used as a way to reach out to coffee aficionados and offer our roasted-when-order coffee beans online. Unique bean offerings and custom roasts became an attractive offer to fans of our beans to experience the various complexities to be found in medium and darker roasts, African beans to Central American beans. And doing this without the snobbery that can sometimes seep into even the most well-intentioned coffee roaster. The “now word”, artisan, has a solid footing in our blueprint. We are proud to have been and still be craftsmen of a trade, focused on perfection, not sales.

It became apparent early on that this online coffee project would need to grow, and after a year of the Café de los Muertos family living on the West Coast, it was time to move back to our home, Raleigh NC. Now we seek a space where we can share our passion for coffee with our neighbors, our city. This web site will now serve to be a documentary of sorts, we plan on updating the site as the search for a coffee house space continues. From finding like-minded vendors to help us fulfill the dream, to the downfalls and stalls of starting our own company… for the first time! We hope to connect with our neighbors on every level, to offer support, education, quality goods, and an always accepting environment. As cheesy as it sounds, as over-quoted as it is, “Life is not about the destination, it is about the journey” is really true.

So the what is the what (Dave Eggers)… What is known is that we will all change as we age. The change we strive for is the change of common good, neighborhood involvement, and quite honestly, damn good coffee. This web site will invariably change as we secure a coffee house space, but for now, the what is a journal.

why

why

This is the tricky one, to be honest. Why anyone does anything often has hidden motivators… pushers and pullers. There are obvious reasons  to open this cafe like financial security and human interaction, but less visible reasons to open this cafe, like ego, self-centeredness, and probably a wanting to belong.

The WHY to us is the least important aspect of self-reflection for creating Café de los Muertos. WHY NOT? Be good, dare to be great, share your love of the arts, the coffee, and the culture of Mexico and Central America. Shine light on a region that has been overlooked, give your neighbors, family, and friends something they will love, make money, survive, help others survive, and in your own little world try to make that space a better place, a better place now and for the future.
